I'm always interested in the debate between prep and prepless games. My long running Trail of Cthulhu game is largely prepless and improvised at the table. If we're short on clues to follow up. I'll throw in a manuscript, a weird claw, a piece of art and see if the players bite. Generally I'll have no idea what it is at that point. And even if they don't I'll reincorporate it later at which point the apocalypse* clock will have ticked closer to midnight (*most apocalypses are fairly local and not Earth, or even continent destroying).
