I've found that Americans, and American players, are far more earnest that British players. There's much more naturally congratulating other players for doing something theme reinforcing. There are still laughs at the table but it tends to less cynical than us Old Worlders. To the extent that games where fan mail is a mechanic don't work quite so well here unless there's a conscious effort made to encourage them. I have had the talk about breaking theme in Trail of Cthulhu when it got a bit out of hand but everyone bought into it straight away and it made the horror so much more meaningful and enjoyable.
