Two comments spring-boarding off the Chain Lightning segment:

While DM'ing this a number of years ago, I accidentally discovered what a vast difference having the poem (riddle/puzzle) from the start entryway makes; it indeed includes every clue you need to navigate the place. My players initially missed it, but then used a D&D divination spell (commune), and I gave them the middle-third of the poem as a result. This worked like a light-switch, changing the experience from frustration to active and feasible puzzle-solving. When they depleted the part I'd given them, it switched back to frustrating. It's pretty interesting that the module has this built-in switch available: poem off (grind up hundreds of players in a tournament) or poem on (successful puzzle-solving possible).

My top recommendation for DMs running this module today: MAKE SURE TO GIVE THE POEM.

Second small comment: The one-line (all caps) denouement at the end was standard in all of Gygax's earliest modules. See also the end of modules: G1, G2, G3, D1, D2, D3, and Q1.
