Just started listening to this podcast and had a couple of quick questions on the first segment - firstly, what is roses and thorns? Is it asking what went well and what could be improved? Secondly, I've been reading Fantasy Flight's Genesys, and I wondered if you might like their Narrative Dice as an alternative to FATE's FUDGE dice. Thanks!

Good catch-- we should have defined Roses and Thorns in the episod so here's a quick summary. At the end of sessions, many of our GMs do a quick debrief about how the game went. In my case I set aside aside 10 to 15 minutes. First we do Thorns: everyone goes around and say something they didn't dig, wanted to see more, weren't happy with their own play about, or felt like it fell flat. It's a chance for the GM to get constructive suggestions and the players to express what they'd like to do more of at the table.

Then we go back around and do Roses where everyone says something they liked about someone's play, the setting, the mechanics, etc. The GM participates in both sides of this.

Many Gauntlet GMs use this tool and if you watch the end of sessions you'll often see this process. I do it every other session; Rich Rogers does it every session. It scared me originally, but it's been a great way to get honest, actionable feedback.

I'd forgotten Genesys/Edge of the Empire/new L5R uses those specialty dice. I've only played a little with them. I think they're actually encompassing a lot more of the system at the table than Fudge dice do. Fudge dice just generate a number, but they're weirdly swingy. OOH the FFG dice generate a host of results. I know a lot of folks dig that system and the options/choices it creates at the table. It was maybe a like mechanics heavy for me-- but I've only played it a tiny bit, so that may not be a fair assessment.

My younger brother was irritated all the time because of this same issue but after I consulted them for him, he feels a lot better and believe me every single issue is solved!
