Dungeon World: Midnight Run Dan Brown runs for David Schultz, James, and Philip Rogers Three adventurers must escort a mysterious prisoner to The Underground Realm. Will they survive the Cemetery Vines? The bounty hunters? The ghosts of Jerance's Mine? Join us as we play to find out. Checkpoint Midnight: Cold Iron Curtain Alexi S. runs for Adam, Brian, Seann, and Will H Vienna, in the midst of the Cold War: four operatives infiltrate a glamorous gala in pursuit of a magical tome for creating golems. Backstabbing, bridge-burning, and bear-fighting ensues. The Final Rogue Jim Likes Games facilitates for Alexi S., Sabine V., and Will H This is our stupidly fun hack of The Final Girl where all the "victims" were villains and the "Killer" was Batman, taking them out one by one. Bounty of the Week: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly David Miessler-Kubanek runs for Mark, Seann, Steven, and Thomas This game uses a hack of Monster of the Week (Powered by the Apocalypse) with special thanks to Rich Rogers for showing me the way. On Tatooine during the Galactic Civil War, one of your own—the famed Boba Fett—went missing in action while serving Jabba the Hutt. The Bounty Hunters' Guild is paying you to retrieve your comrade, dead or alive for the good of the Guild, and to learn who was responsible. How you will respond may vary as you each have a personal connection to Fett. Laser Kittens Stentor Danielson runs for Kristina, Marleigh, and Olivia Here's our GCOG session of Laser Kittens (in two parts because Streamyard crapped out and we had to switch to Zoom). Hearts of Wulin: Rod of Destiny Dan Brown runs for Alex, David Schultz, and Dean The Rod of Destiny was stolen during the once-a-decade festival. Will our protagonists overcome their entanglements to locate it? Will they discover the identity of the mysterious warrior Quiet Flute? Will Swift Hare recover from his disastrous performance? Will Hallowed Night discover her true feelings? Will Scarlet Whirlwind see through her master's betrayal? And is Short Star the cat really dead? Join us as we play to find out. End of the Line: The Last Flight of the Raven Steven desJardins facilitates for Bodhi, Jon, Olivia, and Stentor Danielson Five crew members of a Drodari vessel explore how the ship gained its personality, how we each formed our own unique relationship with the ship, and what we do when we discover the ship is going to be scrapped. Eotenweard: the Elmet Witch Alun R. runs for Bodhi, James, Patsy, and Scot Ryder One of the players got it right when they said of this session of my PbtA game of Dark Age monster-hunting... "I'm sitting here processing how it ended and realised that the most inhuman character (literally a sometimes incorporeal spirit) ended up growing the most as a person, the most human character ended up losing their humanity, the on-the-surface 'lighter' cleric slayed the maybe-but-maybe-not a monster in a religious fervour and the on-the-surface 'darker' cleric wept for the monster she was sworn to slay. That symmetry in our character arcs is just so satisfying!" It was a great session! ...And a vindication of Gauntlet Community Open Gaming as it brought people into the community with little online play experience and little or no PbtA experience. I loved this session. Trophy Gold: The Ruined Abbey of St. Clewd Sam Zimmerman runs for Ivan, James, and Sabine V. Upon a small hill on the outskirts of town sits The Abbey. Well, The Abbey of St. Clewd is it's full name, but if you asked about "The Abbey" to any of the residents of the nearby village they would know exactly what you meant. Although it has lain abandoned for decades, the townsfolk still whisper about the ruined building at night. They keep their voices low, glancing nervously around though no danger is present. Children disappear in the woods around The Abbey, crows constantly circle the broken tower, and those foolish enough to approach at night hear creaking and groaning from inside the abandoned church. Are you brave enough to search its vaults for abandoned treasures and rescue the missing children? For the Honor David Morrison facilitates for Olivia, Rob Ruthven, and Will In the land of Athera, two Princesses have been visited by nightmares of a box hidden in the Endless Forest. Princess Prescia is a mostly loyal member of the Legion, who seek to bring all of Athera under their grasp. Princess Inara is a member of the Rebellion who fight against them. Prescia meets Princess Esfir of the rugged kingdom of Promontory while searching for the item, while Inara hires the forest warden Falcon to track down her counterpart. Who stands to gain most from this, and what are they willing to risk for it? Space Station Omega (Cortex Prime): Into the Breach David Miessler-Kubanek runs for Seann and Will H In this game you play pivotal characters who live on and work with each other aboard a space station. The station is strategically located at a focal point in time – post- or pre-war, and space – in the thick of the most critical decisions fought among the most powerful political factions who are invested in the future of the galaxy. Everyone is still figuring out where they belong and what they are really fighting for while mysterious events unfold to challenge daily life. Nothing is the same anymore. Good Society: Of Fields and Fondness Maria M. facilitates for Josh, Kevin, and Leah Libresco Sargeant Adelaide Mortcombe and Lisette Montmercy were once the best of friends. But when Adelaide steals, then proceeds to break Edward Brimsey/Briscombe's heart, Lisette leaves the country and their friendship behind. Three years later, Lisette returns under the upright and proper wing of Mr. Isaac Bradford (who once also loved Adelaide), who seeks to uphold societal conventions and also see people married exactly the way he wants them to be married. What Mr. Bradford doesn't expect, however, is the arrival of Captain James Hatherford and his good-heartedly-scheming batman, Corporal Fergus Westwood. Will wedding bells ring? Will friendships be rekindled? Or are old rifts too far apart to bridge? Révolution Sam Zimmerman runs for David Schultz, Jim C., and Shannon Révolution gives us politicians and detectives; mobs and weddings; cults and catholics; orphans rising to lead armies or command demons; the sounds of battle in the streets of Paris; the smell of gunpowder and alcohol; the feel of a knife in your back; asking "What do you do next?" Great Soul Train Robbery: A Fistful of Brimstone Alexi S. runs for James, Mario C, Marleigh, and Michael A quartet of Desperados attempt to rob the train to Hell and steal back the deeds to their town. Will Griswald the blind drifter, Liza R. "Hellcat" the tomboy, Charlie "Wild Card" Carr the gambler, and Tzipporah Jenkins the revivalist claim their prize, or will Hell get its hooks into them first? Hearts of Wulin: Encounters of a Spooky Kind Lowell Francis runs for David Schultz, Jon, Jools, and Tara With old tensions and wounds among them, our four heroes are drawn back to the capital to deal with a ghostly threat, only to discover that more pain awaits them in the form of a wedding. NetWhere (Psi*Run): Down the Rabbit Hole David Miessler-Kubanek runs for Manu, Nick, and Wibora NetWhere is a science-fiction adventure tabletop roleplaying game that explores stories between truth and reality. In this game you play hackers who are searching for the Truth of the world while Agents of Truth try to stop them. In NetWhere, we will play to find out who these hackers are and what they are fighting for in this world and the next. The game is in playtest and is empowered by Meguey Baker's Psi*Run. Trophy Dark: Temple of the Sky Gabriel Robinson runs for Greg, Kim, and Mervyn Secret Science Sewer Siblings: The Mutants Take Manhattan Alexi S. runs for David Miessler-Kubanek, Donogh, Eleanor, and Greg G. A one-shot of Secret Science Sewer Siblings, a game of teenage mutant ninja critters. Can the four siblings rescue their mentor from spacefaring, laser-wielding sewer sharks? And will they have to unexpectedly headline a rock concert at the aquarium along the way? Pasión de las Pasiones: Noticias del Mundo (Parts 1 and 2) Jim Likes Games runs for Kyle Wist, Pearl Zare, Scot Ryder, and Shannon For Gauntlet Open Gaming, we tuned into the mega-smash telenovela News of the World and experienced intrigue, romance, betrayal, speeding motorbikes, and of course, drama. Forget-Me-Not: The Mystery of Jessica Ashwick Steven desJardins facilitates for Jim Likes Games and Lara Jessica Ashwick is dead, and for Sheriff Gray and newspaper owner Roberta Euker, Graham Coop is the prime suspect. But local businessman Donovan Wood wants to keep his ties to Coop secret, and public radio DJ Patrick has ideas of his own. Alien Dark: Fiorina 161 Alun R. runs for Glitch, Greg, Kim, and Philip Burned out XO of the USCSS Lake, Greg Fayne & Navigator Arroyo investigate a rogue beacon on the far side of the refinery complex while Chief Engineer Smithson and the Lake's Science Officer, Johanson get on with the survey they are being paid for. Fayne and Arroyo find a deserted scavenger shuttle and a body killed in a way ex-Marine Fayne can't explain. Meanwhile, Captain Jackson, left minding the ship is surprised when 'something' boards the Lake. By the time the teams get back she's missing but Johanson, driven by a desire to know more, follows a blood trail to find 'something' wrapped around her face. Evelyn joins her and gets too close to a large ovoid organic thing... Meanwhile, hyped-on-uppers Smithson is having an episode while Fayne tries to hold the crew together. That's when Arroyo gets an offer from Weyland-Yutani that would solve all her problems... We end on a Mexican stand-off between the tough Fayne, protective Johanson, desperate Arroyo and hyped Smithson... A great pilot episode leaving the network begging for more... Star Wars Saturday 1%er Swoop Gang Rich Rogers runs for Blaise, Greg, John, and Steven Watkins The Sanguine Womp Rats of Corellia rob a hover train and pin it on a rival, but when they decide to take him out, the Imperials get wise. Gauntlet Comics Hit the Streets: Defend the Block: Lower Park (Session 3 of 4) Alun R. runs for David Walker, Donogh, Jim Likes Games, and SalamanderJames The personal fall-out from the previous session continues but then all hell breaks loose as young people start rioting all over Lower Park! Meanwhile, the Shadeux-Computer works out there's more to the music these kids were listening to than meets the eye, but is interrupted when she gets a call for help. After the crisis is averted and the villains plot foiled we finally see Hotwire make a connection with Shadeux; learn more about Void, and understand how his family's values make protecting Lower Park so important to Blink... The crew of the Antikythera (NX-06779) bond over a party game from Risa, before encountering an ion storm of unprecedented power. Fellowship: Rebellious Youth (Session 2 of 12) David Morrison runs for Alex, David Walker, Jamila R. Nedjadi, and Steven S. Phaethon has to confront a member of his former Order to save his new companions. And Ossian fights hard to keep peace in the streets of the town. Sealskin: Playtest Kyle H. runs for Leah Libresco Sargeant, Pearl Zare, Richard Moser, and Steven desJardins The players did a great job playtesting my game about a Selkie who has recovered their magical sealskin and must decide if they will return to the ocean. On the last Sunday of March, the Gauntlet played host to an event we called Queensday: we ran several games all using the Descended from the Queen system, that is, based on the mechanics of Alex Roberts’s For The Queen. The impetus for the event came from community member Jamila Nedjani asking for someone to run For The Queen or a game inspired by it. Several Gauntlet members chimed in about Descended from the Queen games they were working on, and soon there was excited chatter about arranging a “Descended from the Queen Day.” Once the idea was labeled Queensday, it was clear we had to make it happen. Part of the brilliance of For The Queen is that it’s a game of very simple components, and thus very tempting to hack into new forms. You draw cards from a deck of prompts that help you and your fellow players weave a tale of a Queen and her closest companions on a perilous journey. The prompts are designed to deepen and complicate your relationships with the Queen and the party, until you draw the last card and must make a stark choice: “The Queen is under attack! Do you defend her?” In a channel dedicated to Queensday, we not only laid out plans for the event, we also chatted about designing Descended from the Queen games. Among the fascinating discussions was one about time in For The Queen: the cards prompt you to share pieces of the story not only from during the journey but also back at the royal court, with a mix of prompts about singular events and about habitual arrangements. This layering of time helps create the complex and dramatic characters that have an interesting choice come the end of the game. How do we make sure to include similar layering (perhaps of time scales, perhaps of something else) to enrich the stories of our Descended from the Queen games? When the big day came, we ran three Descended from the Queen games on the Gauntlet, two of which are projects in playtesting by Gauntlet members. You can find discussion of each game below. For This Ungrateful City Facilitator: Alexi Sargeant Final question: The City is under attack! Do you defend her? How did the players answer?: Mostly “no, not really” or “yes, but…” For This Ungrateful City is an in-development project from Cloven Pine Games. It lets you tell the story of a group of supers tasked with defending a City that they may decide does not deserve their protection. We played the game using Zoom, a shared Google Sheet, and ForTheDrama (a site that hosts decks of Descended from the Queen games to facilitate online playtesting). Our chosen inspiration image suggested an Art Deco City. We spun out a story involving sharp social divisions between the haves and the have-nots, a morally-ambiguous government-sponsored academy for supers, and the rising threat of the Shadow City. It was an exciting game that ended with the team split and the City in crisis. Video: https://youtu.be/ZfpmQjrFxuM Forever Home Facilitator: Stentor Danielson Final question: Do you agree to adopt the cat? How did the players answer?: Three yesses and a no that got persuaded to change to a yes Forever Home is an in-development game from Glittercats Fine Amusements about a family deciding whether to adopt a cat from the local animal shelter. The questions explore the family members’ relationships to each other, past experiences with pets, and feelings about the particular cat they’ve been getting to know at the shelter. We played using Streamyard and the card deck functionality on RollForYourParty, with a question oracle linked to the cards. Our family was a group of roommates of differing backgrounds and levels of responsibility for a future pet, who had to work out whether we could agree on how to care for our one-eyed rescue cat. Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urbSQ1cUF3w Captain Blood’s Odyssey Facilitator: Steven desJardins Final Question: King William has offered pardon in exchange for turning Privateer against the French. Do you accept? Captain Blood's Odyssey is based on the 1922 novel by Rafael Sabatini. The player characters were all convicted of participating the in 1685 Monmouth Rebellion (whether they were guilty or not) and sentenced to penal servitude in the Barbados, where under the leadership of a surgeon named Peter Blood they escaped captivity and turned pirate (preying, however, exclusively on the Spanish, not their home country). It was designed by Deirdre Donlon and can be purchased on itch.io. Link: https://ddonlon.itch.io/captain-bloods-odyssey I ran the game on Zoom, with a custom-designed spreadsheet that allowed me to deal cards out to the players and have them appear under their characters' names. I used a random number generator to pick the cards to deal, only very occasionally fudging the results. Due to some last-minute drop-outs, we ran with only three players, and every player answered 9-10 questions. In retrospect, I should have slipped the end card in sooner: our characters were all pretty well-defined after a few questions. I played a schoolteacher who sent money to his wife and child in England, without being quite sure it was getting to them. Another player delighted in cultivating a fearsome reputation as a pirate, wearing a necklace of human teeth and spreading stories about her ferocious deeds. And a third was an ex-preacher who was in love with our captain, but repressed his feelings, thinking them to be wrong. In the end, my character wanted to accept the pardon, another wanted to reject the pardon and remain a pirate, and a third simply wanted to remain with the crew, whatever they chose to do. As the facilitator, I forced the third player to break the tie, decreeing that a critical mass of the crew would follow him, whatever he chose, and he elected to become a pirate. So my character and Captain Blood left the ship, accepting the King's pardon and joining the Royal Navy, hoping we would never be called upon to face our old crew in combat. Queensday II? Based on this Queensday, would we consider organizing another one? Absolutely. We had a great time as facilitators and it seems the other players did as well. If we organize a sequel event, we’ll take a few bits of inspiration from bigger events like GauntletCon. For one thing, we’ll schedule downtime between games so they don’t go one immediately after another. This will give players more freedom to play multiple sessions if they so desire. In the meantime, if you have a hankering to try out a Descended from the Queen game, Steven will be running End of the Line, a game about the crew of a sentient ship on the way to scrapyard, on April 16th as part of the free Gauntlet Community Open Gaming. Rich’s Tips for Helping your D&D Group try a One-Shot of Monsterhearts This post comes from Rich Rogers (@orklord) co-host of +1 Forward Podcast, editor for many Gauntlet podcasts, prolific Gauntlet GM, and mourner for the current baseball season. This week Tara, a friend who I’ve been gaming with since we met during a Spacewurm vs. Moonicorn play-by-post that died on the vine in mid 2016 (which is super sad because it had SO MUCH POTENTIAL!), asked me for some help getting ready to run a one-shot of Monsterhearts (a.k.a. MH for short) for her D&D group of many, many years. She’s played Monsterhearts with me a few times, but she’s never MCed it live before. She told me her D&D group of friends are all female and they voted for MH for their first PbtA game. I have far more experience with Monsterhearts as a player than as an MC. That said, I’ve played 71 live sessions of MH (I track ‘em on RPG Geek) and MCed 12 of those sessions. I’ve MCed a good number of play-by-post “sessions” of Monsterhearts, too - it’s a really good system for that medium of play. Most importantly, I’ve played with several people who I consider far superior MCs for MH than myself. I steal from the best. The Best! I scheduled a Zoom meeting with Tara and we talked for about half an hour. Below is a summary of the tips I gave her. PREGAME TALK
